Str8 Talk - November 13, 2008 - Str8 Talk from Ken

Here's some Str8 Talk from Ken...

Did you know that Thrive is Saturday AM? LOL Do your best to participate & invite others to join. Continental breakfast starts @ 8:45 am. You're out by noon.

Once again... THANK YOU for responding to the Finance Team's challenge to give extra to our church. I am amazed at your generosity! Your giving hearts expand God's Kingdom.

In a few weeks, you'll have a list of opportunities to help others around the holidays. It's everything from buying presents, to giving to Missions, to feeding the homeless. Don't let the list overwhelm you. All that I ask is that you do something. You don't have to do everything, but please do something. :-)

CHRISTMAS SCHEDULE
All I Really Want for Christmas: Sat, Dec 13 (PM) & Sun, Dec 14 (AM)
Christmas Eve Services: 3 pm, 4:30 pm, & 6 pm (Childcare, birth through K5, @ 3 pm & 4:30 pm)

Bring 2-3 Dozen Homemade Cookies on Sunday, Nov 30 (the Sunday after Thanksgiving). Our team needs 1,000 cookies when they feed the homeless on Monday, Dec. 1st.

Calvary Children's Home needs a group to paint one of their houses. They're making staff changes and want to get the housing ready for the new family. They provide the materials. You provide the labor. It's all inside painting... 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, and a living area. This could be a great holiday project for someone. For more info, contact Greg: gburchell@sca-atl.com

A member of our church knows an Atlanta company that's looking for a Controller. They want someone who's a CPA with 10+ years experience in accounting / finance. The pay is good. If you know someone who's interested, you can e-mail Andy: tasmothersiv@yahoo.com

If you're looking for an employee or looking for a job, remember we have a Job Board on our website. Contact Sharon Morgan for more info: smm718@yahoo.com

Congrats to David Mulkey. He has gone through a lengthy process and will be ordained to ministry in January. Ordination is a way that a church ‘sets people apart' for special leadership in Christian ministry. David is already being used by the Cobb Chaplain Program. It will be exciting to see how God uses him in the future.

Linda Lipp is starting a Thrift Store at the corner of Macland & New Macland Roads. She needs donations. You can contact her @: Linda_Lipp@comcast.net

We've started the budget process for 2009. The Finance Team has developed a packet for you. It explains the entire process. You can pick up a packet at the church, or check out the one that's attached.

Remember, if it's on your mind, it's on others'. So, send me your questions!

Thanks!

- Ken

Here's my usual disclaimers: I try my best to get everything in here, but I always miss something. Please don't take it personally when I forget to mention something that is important (like your child getting straight A's...). :-)

Also, these items are NOT in any type of order. (Like you couldn't figure that one out...) :-)

America is ending 2008 in a recession. People are losing jobs. The stock market is dropping. But the Bible says that tough times make us stronger and better. How does that happen? How do we eliminate discouragement, shore up our checkbook, and succeed in our career when most people are paralyzed with fear as they face our stormy economic status?

Foreclosures are at an all time high...Bankruptcies are at an all time high... Auto repossessions are at an all time high... Credit card delinquency is at an all time high... Individual saving is at an all time low.

This breakout session will explore 5 definitions for "love" and the 5 love languages as developed by Gary Chapman. The WCC Band consists of two teams of musicians. The Vocals consists of two teams of singers who perform on alternate weeks. Auditions are required for both groups and musicians need to be very stilled in their instrument. We also have a WCC Choir that sings around every 4 months or so.

Wouldn't it be great if you could do what you love to do with people that you'd love to know? That's what BLT Groups are all about!

For seven weeks during the fall and winter, you can get to know people at a different level than you can on Sunday mornings, while being yourself and doing something that you really enjoy.

A group of six to eight people will meet once a week, any time, any place, for any length of time, doing whatever you choose. You can form your own group, or we would be glad to help you find a group. There is no long-term commitment...seven weeks and you are through.

How To Build A B.L.T. - BLT Groups

BLT Groups will meet two times a year - winter and fall - for about seven weeks each 'session'. You're not making a long-term commitment, though. We understand that your schedule changes. We'll take it one 'session' at a time.

Also, you'll have the option of joining a new group in the next 'session' or staying in the same group. We'll see some of both. We also suggest that BLT Groups kick off the seven-week session with a longer time together - especially if you don't know each other.

People who feel well connected in the church may choose a BLT Group with people they don't know. While people wanting to connect with somewhat familiar faces from their ABS Groups may start there.

The Point Person needs to be a member of our church. Outside of that, there are no other qualifications. The Point Person gets the group organized and helps it make decisions. That's all. The Point Person for each group will receive an email with some ideas and instructions on how to get the group started - just to make sure that everyone's on the same page. Please stop by the table outside the auditorium on Sunday mornings for more information and to sign up for a group.

Drama - Worship

In a time of mass media, our ability to reach people through non-visual methods becomes less effective. Drama helps fill this gap by bringing the Word of God to life. By using contemporary settings and situations, our drama team showcases biblical teachings in a very unique and lasting way. Our goal is to paint a picture that will speak volumes and open the door for the Holy Spirit to work in our lives today.

No prior drama experience is necessary to be a part of this ministry, but an audition may be necessary.

West Cobb Church is active in local, national, and oversees mission work. We impact our world for the cause of Jesus Christ.

Local Missions: our local missions projects are coordinated through our ABS Groups. Each group develops a passion and focus for a particular local mission project. We have "tentacles" into many mission needs in our community. Some of our local mission projects are listed below:M.U.S.T. Ministries: Set a Place at the Table. On the first Saturday of each month WCC volunteers to prepare lunch for the residents of Elizabeth Inn at M.U.S.T. Ministries on Cobb Parkway. We also do food drives for M.U.S.T at different times through out the year. Still Elementary Star Tree: Each year at Christmas the WCC family helps families from Still Elementary School who are experiencing financial difficulties provide Christmas gifts for children. Cobb Pregnancy Center: WCC has a partnership with Cobb Pregnancy Center and we provide financial support as well as help with other services.

These are just a few of the local mission projects scheduled for this year. Please contact Kerry Rader for more information or if you would like to volunteer.

National Missions: we partner with the North American Mission Board to provide financial assistance, as well as hands-on help with mission projects throughout North America. In addition, we support Charlotte East Fellowship, a dynamic, new church in a growing area of Charlotte.

Oversees Missions: we partner with the International Mission Board to provide financial assistance to over 4000 missionaries throughout the world. We also have hands-on mission trips for our members. The majority of our "hands-on" focus is in Belarus, a country in the former Soviet Union, and Capetown South Africa. We financially sponsor a new church in Belarus, as well as send one (or more) mission teams to Belarus each year. For more information about our Belarus Missions opportunites, please contact Robin Sosebee, and for more information on our South Africa Missions opportunities, please contact Jim Scarr.

With the rapidly increasing pace of everyday life, our relationships with our family, friends, and Christian brothers tend to suffer. Yet, God wants every man to be on mission for Him - to fulfill God's purpose for his life. The men's ministry offers a "time-out" for men to share, encourage, and inspire each other. This is accomplished through two major focuses:

If you want to truly experience West Cobb Church to its fullest, you need to be connected with an ABS Group. They are the heart of our church, and the best way to get connected to other people in the church family. The foundation of our ABS groups are biblically based, discussion oriented lessons, but the connection in these groups comes from the fellowship with other believers who are in similiar life stages. It is our goal for these groups to "live life together" like any other family by praying for each other, celebrating life's joys together, and supporting each other in difficult times all with the common thread of walking each day with Jesus Christ.

Plugging in @ WCC - Plugging in at WCC

How Can You Get Plugged In at WCC?

It all begins on Sunday mornings...Sunday mornings are a gateway into West Cobb Church. Our Small Groups are an essential part of who we are. (They really are our foundation!) We coordinate many important church activities through this ministry. It provides you with a phenomenal opportunity to meet others and discover more about God and our church.

We have Small Groups for all ages, from the youngest baby to the most mature senior adult, meeting at 9:30 a.m. & 11:00 a.m. (except for our students, 6th - 12th grade. They only meet in the 11:00 a.m. hour.) If you are shy or don't know much about the Bible, don't sweat it! We never ask people to pray or answer a question without their permission. These small groups are worth the effort of attending, so join us!

Our Worship Services are the second part of our Sunday mornings. We have two identical services on Sunday mornings, at 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. The services includes moving, upbeat music, led by our Creative Arts Team. We use drama, video and other creative tools to bring Scripture to life. They compliment a thirty-minute, in-depth Bible study. All this creates an atmosphere where God can challenge you and touch your soul. These services are worth the investment of your time!

Becoming a Member @ WCC - Becoming a Member

Many people ask why they should become an official member of a church? Isn't this outdated? No. Church membership is your way of telling others that you want to be "plugged-into" a church. It tells people that you are a Christian, you agree with the church's beliefs, and you support its philosophy. It also lets others know that you want to serve God through this church. You want to make a difference in your community by working with other believers, not just as a lone-ranger.

You can join WCC by coming forward during the "invitation" or response time of our worship service (usually near the end of the service), or by contacting the church office (info@westcobbchurch.com). If you respond during the worship service, a church member will take you out of the worship center and explain the details of your commitment. If you contact the church office, someone will set up a time to meet with you at your convenience.

To become a member of WCC, you must either be committing your life to Jesus Christ, or have made this commitment earlier in your life. In addition, you should be baptized, by immersion, after your salvation experience.

If you have questions about committing your life to Jesus Christ or baptism, as well as questions about West Cobb Church, feel free to contact the pastor, Ken Williams, at: ken@westcobbchurch.com.

What We Believe... - What We Believe

We believe...God is bigger, better, and closer than we can imagine. The Bible is God's perfect guidebook for living.Jesus is God showing himself to us.Through his Holy Spirit, God lives in and through us now.Nothing in creation "just happened." God made is all.God is doing everything possible to establish an intimate relationship with us - except force it on us.Grace is the only way to have this relationship with God.Faith is the only way to grow in our relationship with God.God has allowed evil to provide us with a choice. God can bring good - even out of evil events. God promised victory over evil to those who choose him.Heaven & Hell are real places. Death is a beginning, not an end.The church is to serve people like Jesus served people.Jesus is coming again.

We Exist…

West Cobb Church exists to take a Real Savior to Real People. We are passionate about making an eternal difference in our community, nation, and world.

We Value…

Our church family values 'the real':

The Bible: applying the Bible's wisdom to our lives, not just learning about it.

Heartfelt Worship: worshiping a merciful God, because of our relationship through Jesus Christ.

Every Person: opening our lives to everyone - even people different than us.

Relevance: using culturally relevant and creative tools to communicate timeless, biblical truths.

Excellence: giving God our best in every situation.

Authentic Relationships: taking off our masks with God and with people.

Lost People: knowing that lost people matter to God, we make certain they matter to us.

We Know…

We know that a diverse community like ours needs only one gospel, but a variety of styles to communicate that gospel (1 Corinthians 9:20-22). When our church family began in 1994, the area had many churches using methods developed in the 19th and 20th centuries.

God established our church to impact our community and world, with more progressive methods. You will see these differences in most areas of the church - from our worship style, to how we view success as a church; from our ministry design to the way we plan and use our buildings. God intends for WCC to be "new wine" for the people in our community who do not have a relationship with Him (Matthew 9:17).

She assists Chad with coordinating Student Ministry events, as well as develop relationships and disciple our WCC students. Chad Cannon organizes and leads our student ministry. Chad is a sixteen year old boy trapped in a thirty-something year old mans body, so he fits right in with the WCC students. If you can't get a hold of Chad he is probably playing basketball, ultimate frisbee, stickball, softball, or watching his beloved Georgia Bulldogs! Did we mention Chad loves sports? Before joining the WCC staff, he served with Campus Crusade's high school ministry, Student Venture, for five years. Chad and his wife Shera, who also serves on staff, have a beautiful daughter, Indie, and thier son Cooper is a mini version of his dad Chad.

Wes Walker began his life as a child prodigy, starring in musicals and dramas at an early age. He was even a Star Search finalist when he was sixteen. (Yes, it's true!) We tried to put a video clip of his Star Search debut on our web site, but he says he has lost the tape. We do know that he sang a Barry Manilow song on the show. (Maybe that's why he can seem to find it!) Wes is a native of Cobb County and has been with WCC since its birth. He leads our Creative Arts Ministry and leads our worship teams on Sundays. (If you attend a worship service, he's the energetic guy with the crazy hair.) While Wes is extremely talented, his greatest attribute is his heart for God and people. He has been married to his wife, Jana, since 1995. They have three daughters, Michaela, Madison and Maleah, and a son Luken.

Ken Williams is a distinguished Poet Laureate with degrees from Harvard, Yale, and Cambridge. Well…not really! He does write the weekend worship service messages, but they aren't exactly poetic. He also holds degrees from three colleges, but none of them are Ivy League. Ken spent most of his life in Florida and graduated with a music degree from Florida State University. (He claims that FSU is a devout Christian college, but we know better!) He then studied theology at Southwestern Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. Ken recently earned his Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership. Don't let the Ph.D. scare you, though. He has friends and family who keep his head out of the clouds. Ken moved to Marietta with his wife, Shawna, in February, 2001 to pastor WCC. He and Shawna have two adorable children, Jeffery and Cassidy. (Obviously, they take after Shawna!) By the way…Ken has visited Harvard University. Maybe that counts for something!

Kim Harris is an essential member of the WCC staff, and to be honest, we have no idea how we ever survived without her! As Leadership Strategist, her major focus is to enlist, equip, and enable our volunteer leaders who, in turn, lead our church ministries. Kim earned a master's degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, has served in the ministry at several local churches. Kim and her husband, Randy, have two teenage children, Mason and Emily, who keep them young and very active.

Our Mission
To encourage women to be in the Word and prayer daily to develop a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Our Core Values
The Word - we know we are living by this value when we apply Biblical truths in our daily living.
Prayer - we know we are living by this value when we acknowledge God and continually communicate with Him.
Identity - we know we are living by this value when we model the actions and attitudes of Christ in our lives.
Others - we know we are living by this value when we accept women and encourage them to be in the Word and prayer daily to develop their relationship with Jesus.

Picture of the future - women in love with Jesus worshiping Him.

Yet sometimes in the busyness of our days or the duties of our jobs or the familiar habits of our worship or the everyday routine of our homes, the longing becomes complacency, and we sleep through opportunities to be with Him. This 9-week study will show how you can experience an authentic, deeper, richer relationship with God in a life-changing, fire-blazing revival.
