I’m sitting here at church, watching third, fourth, and fifth graders practice drama for a Kids Express program in a few weeks. Karen Howell is directing this group of six children and they’re having a blast!
Karen is an experienced, caring actress and director. She works in professional theater and I’m always amazed at her work. Right now, one of the children is giving Karen suggestions. It’s hilarious! The child means well and fully believes she’s right. And Karen is so patient with this girl, as well as the other children. Karen listens, nods, and gently tells them to follow her lead.
When I watch Karen, I see God. He’s just like that. Patient, loving, and guiding us… even when we’re sure we’re right.
God is amazing! Karen Howell is too…

I am thankful for Karen too – she MUST be pateint to have my son!
I noticed in today’s reading that the Israelites seemed to always need an idol of some sort. Anything that removes God from the throne of our lives is an idol. They can take so many forms – poeple, pessesions, positions, habits, even our own desires! Just like the Israelites, mine seem to change often. Just when I tear one idol down, another takes it place. This week I have been dieting, because food is one of mine. I didn’t realize until this week how much of my life revolves around my next meal! I want to want God more than my daily bread! Idols ARE a snare (just like for Gideon). I am a Type 2 diabetic as a result of my idolatry (well, and some genetics too!) I want to take responsibilty for what I can control – diet and exercise, but not let those become idols too. I think this is something we all need to evaluate frequently – I know I do!
I have so little Idle time, I’m really neglecting my Idols. When I have the time, those guys really shine…new gold leaf, fresh coats of paint, the works.
Maybe I’m in such a diffcult test because my idols get too much of my attention. I think ambition is a difficult one for men. I think sports can be an idol. Even technology can be an idol for men.
Not only do they keep you us from God. They have a way of nudging out the family too.
